Would you want to be a student in your own classroom? The morning session will be based on 7th grade teacher Pernille Ripp’s book Passionate Learners: How to Engage and Empower Your Students Pernille will help both novice and seasoned educators create a positive, interactive learning environment where students drive their own academic achievement. You’ll discover how to make fundamental changes to your classroom so learning becomes an exciting challenge rather than a frustrating ordeal. Attendees will discover practical strategies for: building effective relationships with students based on mutual trust, respect and appreciation; increasing attentiveness to student needs; sharing classroom ownership, and; breaking out of the vicious cycle of punishment and reward to control student behavior.
Pernille will continue the afternoon conversation with a focus on building passionate readers and will be based on the forthcoming book Passionate Readers – The Art of Reaching and Engaging Every Child. With 28% of adults reporting they have not read a book in the last 12 months, we are facing a mounting reading crisis. So, what can we as educators teaching the future generation of readers, do to create more engaging reading experiences? Focusing on teacher reading identity, classroom environment, and library, as well as student reading identity, this is a workshop sure to inspire. From re-thinking major literacy decisions and reviewing the small decisions we make daily; this is meant to be a practical hands-on experience that will offer ideas to be implemented the very next day.
This session is perfect for both new and seasoned teachers and will inspire them to take some risks in pursuit of a classroom filled with passionate learners!
