Our occupational therapist, our special education paraprofessional, and principal noticed the many sensory needs of our students. With community grant money, we decided to create a sensory room of our own to meet these needs. The sensory room addresses the three major sensory processing disorders of vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile needs. Through various activities, students are able to take brief, supervised, sensory breaks in order to function at an optimal level throughout the day. We have observed the many benefits and collected data to show what a difference this has made for our students. Our classrooms also have several flexible seating options to help students meet these needs within the classroom throughout the day. Today we'll discuss the three types of sensory disorders and the activities that go along with them to ensure optimal performance of your students.

How to Improve Your Attendance for APR

90/90 How do we get our kiddos here? At my previous assignment in Climax Springs, we raised our elementary attendance from 78% to 95% in just one year and our high school attendance from 64% to 92% in just two years. There are many effective instructional strategies that engage students and move teaching and learning toward higher level thinking skills. The Leader in Me moves beyond engagement to harness the power of these strategies to empower students to lead their own learning. Empowering instruction rests on a foundation of genuine, trusting relationships. Teachers must have an opportunity to engage in regular planning and reflection through collaborative efforts to ensure learning tasks are engaging and students have an opportunity to pursue learning instead of pursuing the right answer. Through participation in a lab experience, teachers were provided an opportunity to engage each other and enhance the learning in their classrooms. The Leader in Me does not only empower students, it empowers the entire learning community.

The most direct route to improving students’ educational outcomes is by improving teacher effectiveness. Teachers’ ability to forge positive relationships with students, assess students’ current levels of performance, and tailor instruction to meet students’ needs increases learning at a greater rate than other variables. As a result, principals acting as instructional leaders is a role strongly pushed in professional literature. Instructional leadership centers on the ability of principals to evaluate teachers by increasing their instructional capacity. If we expect principals to improve their teacher evaluation skills, it is important for principal supervisors to think about how they support principals in being instructional leaders. The purpose of this presentation is twofold. First, to reflect on our own principal supervision behaviors as we attempt to refine ways we grow principals’ leadership. This includes an in-depth discussion around collecting data around one principal evaluation standard in our school district, Springfield Public Schools (SPS). Two, to ask for assistance from MAESP delegation in answering this important question, “What do principals need most from those who evaluate their effectiveness?”

Addressing Bullying Through Universal and Targeted Social and Communication Skills Instruction

Bullying has become a pervasive issue facing the nation’s youth. Given the pervasiveness of bullying and the revised state legislation, districts must begin implementing interventions and programming designed to reduce the prevalence of bullying within their schools. This session will detail an evidence-based protocol for implementing a skills-based approach for reducing perpetration and victimization among K-5 youth. Specifically, universal and targeted intervention strategies for improving social-emotional learning, social skills, and communication skills will be introduced.

Thinking prompts offer schools a common thread of relevant subject matter that will get powerful and productive discussion flowing. Be the One: An Educator's First Steps to Understanding Trauma Informed Practices

The numbers are staggering and growing, and undoubtedly impact the educators in your school. Children who have undergone trauma, or who have experienced a high number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), are severely at risk for psychological, behavioral, and social-emotional problems. More often than not, these students are in and out of the principal and counselor’s offices, are challenging for their teachers, and often seen as the “bad” kids. As educators, we are critical pieces to the puzzle that can lead to recovery for students of trauma, and at the very least, educate our staff to be trauma-sensitive and informed. What’s the answer for these students? It might be as simple as, “Be the one.”

Believe it or not, there are more children in foster care across this country than the entire population of St. Louis and Columbia, MO combined. Although children come into care as a result of abuse or neglect, nearly ½ of people surveyed believe children are in foster care because they’ve done something wrong. Adding insult to injury, children in foster care are often invisible in schools. Is it any wonder children in care are many times more likely to drop out of school, or become pregnant teens, homeless or incarcerated? Learn about the Missouri foster system, as well as how schools can help disrupt the foster care to prison pipeline.

Come and learn how one elementary site within the Springfield Public School system has re-imagined their school days to create amazing OST experiences for their highly at-risk elementary students, engaging nearly 70% of their student body.

When Bartley Elementary set out to make changes involving processes and systems, we found out very quickly that the changes we needed to make affected the existing group norms, beliefs, and values, making change a challenge. It has been estimated that 70% of school initiatives end up in failure. Initiatives for schoolwide improvement are complicated and it is easy to see why many fail. One of the main reasons for this failure is poor execution. Good intentions are not enough if a school hopes to make significant change and growth. At Bartley Elementary, we have experimented over the years to devise, implement and execute improvement goals that have resulted in real change and growth. In this presentation, we will revisit the process of our PLC, sharing our hits and misses and giving all participants our strategies to focus on the four corollary questions.


Genius Hour: Building Passionate Learners

Genius hour allows students to be in charge of their own learning by self-selecting projects based on their own personal passion. Students become experts in their chosen field by connecting with real-world experts as well as through rigorous online research. Genius Hour sparks critical thinking and problem-solving and leads to high levels of student engagement. Too often, students from disadvantaged backgrounds have a limited exposure to a multitude of careers and possibilities. Genius Hour provides a way for students to explore beyond the curriculum and beyond their own schools and neighborhoods. It exposes them to a wide array of opportunities and helps to ignite a passion for learning in every child. This session explores the purpose of Genius Hour, the plan on how you can effectively implement it in your school, and examples of student projects.


The Story of a PreK-12 Principal

Improving the quality of education continues to be a concern around the nation. The debate focuses upon student success as research attempts to identify what the major correlations of an “effective school” may be. A major correlation that continues to be overlooked and understudied is what it means to be culturally competent. Cultural awareness developed into culturally competent can have a dramatic effect on leadership and student achievement. This workshop has been designed to define the term culturally competent, while outlining its direct connection to culturally relevant pedagogy for K-12 learners. By helping staff learn and practice the skill of composure, leaders can help! Composure is the state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself. Using Conscious Discipline as the main resource, you will learn about the power of perception, positive reframing, how to identify trigger thoughts, how to dig beneath the anger, active calming skills, a basic understanding of how the brain works, mirror neurons, downloading calm to others, and reducing/managing stress. We will end the session with strategies you can support staff in implementing with your students; these include daily rituals, the language of safety and implementing a calm spot.

The I AM NOTICED program is a philosophy educators can utilize to provide continuous improvement in a school environment. The concept of Noticing in a creative way is a proposed method of practical leadership that when used properly will help educators reach their building goals. Our goals are to help increase academic achievement, parental involvement, positive school culture and to decrease behavior incidents and staff turnover.

Our intention is to train educators on the impact of noticing and appreciating everyone in the school environment. Within this session it is our intention that participants experience the power of self-esteem, worthiness, feeling appreciated and knowing that who they are and what they do matters. Ultimately we want them to have the concept and the programming opportunities to take back to their school or district.

It has been said that "Culture eats strategy for breakfast", and as a result, the act of transforming school culture is paramount in creating a healthy and high achieving school. Parker Road would like to share our journey through Action Research and how it has allowed us to begin transforming school culture - where there is a sense of belonging for all. We would also like to present participants with some input training and activities around beliefs and tools that can be taken and applied to each participant's home school if they choose. After learning about these tools, schools will have a chance to plan and create some action steps for application in their own setting.


“I'll Fly Away” Songwriting in the Classroom Program

The program consists of a five to ten day, 60 minutes per day, guided writing program with an actual published songwriter. The songwriter works as a co-teacher with the regular classroom teacher to take the students through the writing process from brainstorming to publishing using music as a medium. At the end of the program, the class will have worked collaboratively to create original song works tied to topics within their grade level MO Learning Standards. This is a foundation-funded program. We are in our third year of participation and are excited to share the gains in writing fluency our students are achieving. Funding sources will be shared during the presentation.

The Montgomery County R-II District is on a journey of improvement. We developed a new CSIP using a collaborative process to drive improvement processes.
